We'll see

I did it.

It's done.

And it's my mom's fault.

We were talking yesterday about Julia's issue with sensitive skin (shhh! Don't say mean things to Julia's skin ... it's sensitive.) and Mom started talking about disposable diapers and chemicals and all sorts of nonsense.

And I listened.

And I did some research.

And decided we should make the switch. Sort of. We're going halfway. We're putting Julia in cloth diapers at night. For three reasons:

1) She sleeps through the night at this point. If she's in a cloth diaper all night, that's 10-12 hours that she doesn't have diaper chemicals in contact with her skin, but only one diaper that I have to clean per day.

2) We have a closet full of Huggies in various sizes bought when Amazon had a "Spend $100 get $30 off" sale that I'm too cheap to toss and too lazy to try to sell.

and more importantly

3) She rarely (as in never) poops at night. Just pee. And quite honestly, if I opened up the cloth diaper and found poop in there, I think I would just throw the whole thing in the trash. Which defeats the purpose of cloth diapers.

So I found a website with several different cloth diapers available for purchase (and an interesting philanthropic effort) and made my own starter kit: a couple of both Indian and Chinese prefold diapers, a water-proof wrap, a couple of Hemp Babies Bigger Weeds diapers, some Cotton Babies inserts, and one each of the three different kinds of bumGenius diapers (the Bamboo fitted cloth diapers, the All-in-One cloth diaper, and the One-Size cloth diaper).

I really, really wanted to add the Baby Wipe Kit, but I thought that might be going a bit overboard. I'll save it for my next order once I figure out which diaper I like best (or if I even use them at all).

And I can't say enough that I blame my mother for all this.

I object! We didn't talk about diapers at all! We talked about Tide and Downy. I don't remember that other conversation. Are you sure it was me?! Love mom

You might want to look into using Tide Free...we switched to that not too long ago and it helped. We also don't use Downy on her clothes.

Mom: Just quit making excuses ... no one believes you! However, if you don't remember introducing me to the fact that disposable diapers use the same chemical to provide super absorbancy that is banned from use in tampons ... well, I'll just let it go and try to find someone else to blame.

Laura: I've been thinking about switching to Tide Free when I next buy detergent. So far she's okay with the All Baby, but now that I know that fragrances can be an issue ... and I don't use fabric softener either.

hmmm...I didn't even know there was an All Baby or we might have tried that. We tried Dreft and that made her skin look terrible. I think we figured out that between the laundry detergent and the Johnson's and Johnson's baby wash, her skin didn't like either one. I guess we just have to try different things to see what does and doesn't work. =) Hope you guys have a great weekend.

I wish I had known...we are an avid Aveeno family. Soap, lotion, sunscreen, oatmeal baths, you name it. (Wal Mart brand measures up on all but lotion, though they don't offer sunscreen alternative!) And we have been using Fuzzi Bunz for about 18 mths now. I love them. Buzz me if ya have questions...
