It's Potty Time!

We've been sort of, halfway working on potty training with Julia these past months. Frankly, a total lack of interest on her mother's part is to blame for the astonishing lack of progress. Basically, until yesterday, Julia would pee in the potty right after getting up for the day, but the rest of the day was hit and miss. Mostly miss.

I've had a hard time finding something to convince Julia that getting potty trained would be a good idea. I tried the psychological arguments:

1) "You'll be independent and able to go potty by yourself and not wait for Mommy to change your diaper"

To which she would say: "No, Mommy. Mommy help Julia. Julia wear diaper."

2) "You'll be Mommy's Big Girl!"

To which she would say: "No, Mommy. I Mommy's Baby. Mommy have two babies, Julia and Dax."

I tried the lure of princess panties:

3) (at Target) "Do you want to pick out some princess panties to wear after you go pee/poop in the potty?"

Okay, this one had marginally more success, but after her morning pee in the potty she would wear the princess panties until she needed to go to the bathroom, then she would tell me she wanted to wear a diaper and she'd then go in the diaper. I would make her sit on the potty first, but she has amazing abilities to hold it until the diaper was on her little behind!

So, I was rather frustrated until I hit on the magic words:

4) "Julia, if you pee and poop in the potty you'll get some candy!"

Oh, bribery. What can I say? It works. The past two days, in exchange for two Pez each time she pees and M&Ms when she poops, Julia has mainly gone in the potty.

Yesterday's count was two pees in the potty; one pee in the living room; one pee in a diaper during nap time; one pee started in our bedroom, but stopped and finished in the potty and, for the first time ever, she pooped in the potty!

This morning she pooped in the potty as well. And led me to a parenting, potty training dilemma I never thought I would face:

Do you reward her for pooping in the potty or reprimand her for creating a mess by PLAYING in it?!?!?!

Really. And I know she has a, um, history of creating her own little fecal friends, but I thought we had discussed the concept of not playing in the potty. At all. Especially not when it's full of poop. I guess we need to go over it again. *sigh*

He!! I'm a few weeks behind you, but right there with you in spirit. Faye ::loves:: to sit on the potty, looks to wear her 'big girl pants', loves to tell me she needs the potty, but just cannot for some reason connect the act of going to the loo with sitting on the potty.

The other day she was sitting on my office chair in her BGP watching some YouTube and pee-ed all over the seat. When I wailed at her "oh why faye?!!!" she opened her eyes extra wide and said "I got big girl pants on Mummy. Need a nappy."

This week I have finally succumbed to buying Gina Ford's book. Let's see how the witch goes.

I can't help but laugh over here. That is until I imagine her actually playing with her poop. All I can say is: I'm sorry.

Laura-Best of luck! Will you be waiting until after the move?

Tabitha-That's alright ... you got it coming to you, too :P And one of the benefits of having your kids (sometimes) in cloth diapers is that you get used to dealing with stuff like that ... a little. That's not to say I want her to make it a habit!
