Cimanum

I've become convinced over the past months that Julia is allergic to cinnamon. At first I thought I was crazy because in the baby food books/websites, it's the spice most recommend as the first to introduce since it is relatively mild and sweet. However, for Julia, it causes a bright red rash all around her mouth and on her cheeks.

We first suspected it a couple months ago when I added cinnamon to some of her applesauce. The bottom half of her little face turned red (and stayed red for several hours) and she refused to eat more than a few bites. I had never heard of a cinnamon allergy, but we didn't add it to anything else for a while to test our theory. Last week I fed her some oatmeal that I spiced up with brown sugar and cinnamon. Another bright red rash and refusal to eat. I searched on Google for "cinnamon allergy" just to see if anything turned up and found out that it is a real thing. The most common reaction seems to be a skin irritation. It's hard to tell at this point if it is causing a problem inside her mouth. Another thing to add to our list of questions for the next doctor's appointment. In the meantime, no more cinnamon. And we were just about to let her try out her first piece of Big Red.

My youngest daughter is sensitive to cinnamon and popcorn salt. The cinnamon only seems to bother her if she touches the raw cinnamon out of the shaker. If you put it in something like sweetpotatoe pie or if its on prepackaged cinnamon buns she seems fine. I don't know why this is. We have always sat down and ate microwave popcorn. On one occassion we purchased popcorn salt. The moment she put the popcorn in her mouth she broke out in welts.
